Green Tea Ice Cream

It might be a commonly-known thing, but one type of ice cream you can buy easily in Japan is green tea / matcha ice cream!

You can buy it in America, but it's definitely a lot harder to find. In Japan, Häagen-Dazs even sells their own version in grocery stores. I didn't buy their brand, though. Instead, I got it at a little ice cream / takoyaki / snack bar in a small town I was sight-seeing in. It was good, although a bit overwhelming flavor-wise after a few licks. I'm sure that depends on the maker, though -- I might've just been unfortunate to have my first time eating matcha ice cream be with extra matcha!

  1. After two years if visiting Japan, one thing I've noticed is the difference between the US and Japan is what we determine the flavor of green things are.

    In the US, if it's green, there's a good chance it's mint flavored.

    In Japan, if it's green, it's most likely tea flavored.

    I remember thinking I was getting mint cake, only to have it be tea flavored, to my surprise.

    I hadn't thought about that! You're right, I think every time I had some green tea-flavored food, it was kind of a shock that it wasn't mint, as though that's what my mouth's come to expect when I see green, haha.

    It's kind of like a strong cup of green tea...only it uses matcha powder, so the flavors kind of different from a normal cup of tea. I wouldn't say it's bitter...just strongly flavored, I guess.

    @my day in a sentence

    Thank you, I'm glad you like it! :)

  9. Nasty. I hate green tea. I tastes like grass. Earl grey ice cream on the other hand would be wonderful.

    @Fang
    Tea isn't supposed to be really bitter. You're leaving the leaves in too long. Take them out after 2:30 minutes at most.
